Monde Intérieur: Issue Two

The senses link our inner workings to the outside world. They are the antennas to our surroundings for connecting, interpreting, and feeling our way through life. They allow us to observe and express, to listen deeply, to feel the softest touch and the most overwhelming emotions. They spark memories and moments of delight, and can also put us in a bad old mood sometimes.

This issue of Monde Interieur is loosely based on these little superpowers we call the senses. An ode to the richness they bring to the unique landscapes of our lives.

The interviews in these pages take quite the journey. A pilgrimage from Porto, up the Atlantic Coast on the Camino de Compostela, to an artist’s residence on the island of Mallorca, a stop in San Sebastian to talk about the weather, and then off to Copenhagen for a conversation on clay. We make our way to Santa Barbara to wax lyrical about figs and other fresh fruits, and finally, back to London for a talk about voice at Diogenes the Dog in Elephant and Castle.

What I love about these conversations is that they are long and rambling. The best kind, if you ask me. But sometimes, between long reads, you need a little rest. An interlude, if you will. And for that, we have Wine Time. A little sip of something fresh or bold or full-bodied to keep you going as the stories progress.

So, enjoy this little sensory adventure. If I learnt one thing from it, it’s that in making sense of the senses, we can make sense of ourselves - why we take the steps we take, say the things we say, and are the funny little people that we are.
